Lucifer’s Scarlett Estevez (DADDY'S HOME) is all grown up and fighting crime with J.J. Villarreal as luchador superheroes on Disney Channel’s Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion. CineMovie sat down with the actors to talk about the new series, and how the Lucha libre culture will be a big part of the Disney series.
Scarlet plays Violet Rodriguez, your average teen who documents her every move on social media. When she stumbles upon the magical luchador mask, she becomes Ultra Violet and wants to advertise her new found powers online. The luchador mask isn’t unique to Violet as her luchador uncle, Cruz has been fighting crime as the superhero luchador Black Scorpion. He takes her under his wing for training in the ring, but she’s too eager to put herself on the streets so she can boast about it on social media. No doubt, this little superhero will face some big surprises in her eagerness.
Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion will debut on the Disney Channel Friday, June 3, and the series will also be available on Disney+ starting on June 8.
Violet Rodriguez, an everyday Mexican American teen, who is chosen by a magical luchador mask which transforms her into Ultra Violet, a superhero fighting crime alongside her luchador uncle, Cruz, also known as Black Scorpion. Although Cruz takes Violet under his wing to teach her the responsibilities of her special powers, she doesn't always see eye-to-eye with him when it comes to his methods for capturing crooks. In the meantime, she must keep her superhero identity secret from her parents and her older brother Santiago ("Tiago"), as well as her friends and schoolmates. However, she does lean on one close confidante: her best friend Maya Miller-Martinez, who provides advice and assists with documenting Ultra Violet's adventures on social media.
Disney starlet Scarlett Estevez leads the all Latinx cast including J.R. Villarreal (“Akeelah and the Bee”) as Uncle Cruz/Black Scorpion, Marianna Burelli (“Paramedicos” ) as Nina Rodriguez, Juan Alfonso (“American Princess”) as Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Brandon Rossel (“Fast Layne”) as Tiago, newcomers Zelia Ankrum as Maya Miller Martinez and Bryan Blanco as Luis León.
Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion is produced by GWave Productions, LLC and executive produced by duo Eric Garcia and Leo Chu (“Alexa & Katie”) who also serve as showrunners.
