We can now add another family friendly robot with Chappie starring Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman. Here are 10 other love stories between a human and a robot in television and movie history that count among our favorites.
10. Transformers Movies (2007)
Who wouldn't want an Autobot as a guardian? While the film franchise is nothing to rave about, the relationship between Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky and Optimus Prime is the hook.
9. I, Robot (2004)
Will Smith begrudgingly partners with a robot named Sonny to investigate the murder of his creator. I, ROBOT isn’t exactly your warm and fuzzy-type movie, but the two come to rely on each for survival, and become friends.
8. Short Circuit (1986)
An 80s favorite, this robotic love story takes place between a woman (Ally Sheedy) and a military robot who develops self-awareness and consciousness, and Johnny 5 as he likes to be called, evades capture and forms a special bond with his new friend.
7. Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001)
A robot and boy are one in the same in this Steven Spielberg film. This robotic boy played by Haley Joel Osment is rejected by his human parent, and sets out to become a “real” boy in the Steven Spielberg film. The movie is a bit of a bummer, but its definitely a tear-jerker like the rest of them.

Like AI, this is a boy and a robot in one in this animated tale based on Japanese manga series. Astro Boy is an android robot created in the image of a scientist’s dead son. Rejected by his father/creator, Astro Boy embarks on a journey to find himself and becomes a superhero.

Instead of a family dog or cat, this TV family's pet is a robot named Robby the robot a guardian to Will Robinson whose family is stranded on a planet. "Danger, Will Robinson!" was the 7-foot robot's catchphrase when his young human friend faced imminent threats. Robby the Robot first appeared in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, and adapted for other science fiction movies and television programs.

Set in the futuristic world of robot boxing, Hugh Jackman stars as struggling promoter making ends meet gambling on fighting robots, but the story that pulls on the heartstrings is the relationship between the 11-year old boy and Atom who bring the father and son closer together.

The inflatable health companion from the Disney film is quickly becoming a fan favorite now that the movie is a big hit with audiences of all ages.
2. Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot (1967-1968)
This Japanese import aired on United States television in the late sixties and featured a giant robot who follows orders from a young kid as they fight the Gargoyle Gang and alien monsters. This childhood favorite had its tear-jerking moments. This robot didn’t talk, nor showed emotions, but the bond was strong between the heroic duo.
